DJ Who – Attack II EP
Catalog Number: DR007
Release Year: 1995
DJ Who is Chip Watkins, one of Baltimore’s current crop of outstanding and influential DJ’s who has earned national respect. Chip has brought his unique DJ’ing style of techno, house, and funk fusion to thousands of devoted fans throughout the USA. His unusual blend of grooves probably stems from the fact that he cites influences ranging from indie rock to the old school freestyle house of New York City.
“Attack II” is DJ Who’s follow-up to his highly successful debut “Attack of the Deep Dark Dubs” (DR002). That release received solid coast to coast US play, as well as a significant UK response (Justin Robertson doesn’t play just any record…). Not quite trance, not quite funk, not quite techno or house, “Attack II” (and Defective Records) aims to define a genre that melts the boundaries imposed by current dance music. Check out “Trance Ta GoGo” and you’ll start to get a feel for what we mean…

Dust Brothers Essential list, track “Give A Little More”
Retina Magazine, U.S.A., Mar/Apr ’95
“The logo side of this new EP kicks off with ‘Give A Little More’, a must for followers of minimal Detroit style techno. ‘PB4UGO2BED’ follows with some funky-ass techno, uptempo trip hop with an acidic tinge, accented with well timed and catchy vocal samples. Flip yer platter to find ‘A Hard Winter’s Night’, acid trance that should have the Germans jumpin’ out of their ledder hausen. Closing out the 12″ is ‘Trance A Go-Go”, which as the title may suggest, fuses minimal techno with trip hop. The ‘Give A Little More’ vocal returns as the track takes the dance floor on a roller coaster energy ride. A percussive build up crashes to a funky low bpm breakdown (reminiscent of DC style go-go), which includes a sample of Snap’s ‘Power’ cowbells. Look for it, straight out of Charm City.”
