Dei Sub – Criminally Groovin Too
Catalog Number: DR023
Release Year: 1997
Dei Sub is Anthony Ruggeri of Philadelphia. “Criminally Groovin Too” is the culmination of this guy’s explosion onto the techno scene. His first release, “One” (DR015), also on Defective, met with rave reviews last year, and he stole the show on the highly praised DJ Who remix double 12″ (DR.018), where his remixing talents were featured on three different tracks.
Dei Sub lists multiple influences on its sound, from Bach to Tangerine Dream to Hardfloor and LFO, and it shows. He’s managed to create a certain niche for himself by creating a truly electronic based funk. Not the stuff of P-Funk and George Clinton days mind you, but rather a 21st century funk that is definitely a must hear! Although hard to describe, one thing is for sure – dancefloors love it!
“What The Jump” – a hard-edged, dark, fast and “bumpy” anthem, complete with a classic rap sample (we won’t tell you who) subtley added in towards the end; “Mine” – rubber bassline, corroded electronic tones, propulsive snares, totally cool; “Q Particle” – a trancey outerspace jam with percussion galore!
The scary thing? This guy just keeps getting better and better…
